Great news guys, the Australian Open gets underway in Melbourne today!
World Number One and defending champion Novak Djokovic is the favourite to lift the Men’s Title, and is currently available at 4/6 (1.66) at bet365. Having come so close to the Calendar Grand Slam in 2015, Djokovic will be looking to start 2016 in repeat fashion as he aims to become the first man to complete the feat since Rod Laver in 1969. Currently Djokovic is joint 7th in the list of Most Grand Slam singles titles and 7 behind the great Roger Federer. Should he come out on top in Melbourne then this would leave him 6 behind and with a 6 year age gap between the pair, many would fancy Novak to go to be classed as the greatest ever – a title surely in the waiting if he does complete the Calendar Grand Slam?
The second favourite in the men’s outright betting is Andy Murray, who is priced at 5/1 (6.00). Although Murray has been handed a favourable draw this morning, the opposite side to Djokovic and Federer, the impending arrival of his first child has caused him to claim he’ll leave the tournament should his wife go into labour and therefore it may be worth exploring other options. French Open champion Stan Wawrinka is priced at 12/1 (13), although should results go as expected, he’ll meet 2009 champion Rafa Nadal in the quarter finals.
Moving over to the Women’s betting market and you really can’t look past the 3/1 (4.00) favourite, Serena Williams. Like Djokovic, Serena was also close to completing the Calendar Grand Slam in 2015, only to fall at the penultimate hurdle, going down 2-1 in the semi-finals against Roberta Vinci. If you’re looking for an outside bet, then Serena’s US Open conqueror can be backed at 150/1 (151.00) to lift the trophy.
Looking at more realistic challengers to the mighty Williams, 2012 &13’s Champion Victoria Azarenka will be looking to claim her first major since her US Open crown in September 2013. The Belarussian is currently priced at 4/1 (5.00) and having been knocked out in the 4th round of the tournament last year, will be hoping to better that result. Additionally, other challengers may include world number two Simona Halep, who looks a big price at 9/1 (10.00), the ever competitive Maria Sharapova at 10/1 (11.00) and Wimbledon runner up Garbine Muguruza at 12/1 (13.00)
